Just a few days ago, both the 1996 Japanese (POP 997) and 1999 English (POP 486) Base Set Charizard PSA 10s sold for $23,400.
Even though they ended at the same price, the paths they took over the past year couldn’t have been more different.
The English copy went on a roller coaster ride, while the Japanese version quietly and steadily caught up.
Here’s how their price histories unfolded over the past 12 months.
The English copy began the period at $12k, nearly 3× the price of the Japanese version.
It surged to a record $48k before giving back more than half its gains, eventually settling at $23,400.
Even after the correction, it’s still worth almost 2× what it was a year ago.
The Japanese copy told a very different story.
It started at just $4k and climbed steadily to $23k, increasing by more than fivefold over the same period, with no major 50% correction along the way.
The contrast is remarkable.
Despite starting at just one-third of the English card’s value, the Japanese version ultimately caught up, doing far better.
